Hurricane Ike has claimed two golfers amoung it’s many victims. High winds from the storm toppled a tree on a Nashville TN golf course, killing two men in a golf cart on Sunday.
Police identified the victims as 32-year-old Jason Proffitt and 43-year-old Joseph Carter, both of Pleasant View, Tenn., who died at the scene near the 16th hole.
Wind speeds near the area were clocked above 50 mph around 9am when the accident occured. Apparently, this strong wind caused a tree to fall onto their golf cart Sunday afternoon at the Hermitage Golf Course.
Witnesses on the course tried to help, but they could not lift the tree from the cart. Firefighters, ambulances and police rushed to the golf course, closing it down
News reports mentioned that the Firefighters said when winds were as strong as they were Sunday morning, everyone should try to stay clear from possible falling debris.
“If you’re in a wooded area, or if you’re outside, I would be extremely cautious where I am, especially with the wind this high,” said Rick Taylor, Fire Chief with the Metro Fire Department.
A tragic loss of life from the remants of a major hurricane. I would advise everyone to heed the warning above. If winds are that strong, stay off the course.
